Emergency Department Resident: Orthopedic Rotation
ED Intern Rotation:
Goals:
Be able to manage patients admitted to the Orthopedic Service
Perform comprehensive Orthopedic Trauma Examination
Be able to perform Orthopedic consultations for patient admitted to the hospital and present in the Emergency Department
Be able to safely admit and discharge patients
Expectations:
Carry ortho phone and pager at all times and respond in a timely fashion
For consults, give formal presentation to an attending including any pictures/images and your treatment plan
Complete consult note with an assessment and plan for each consult you see by the end of the day
Before the note, contact the team directly with the plan, and make sure they ask questions to clarify. Speak with an attending if needed.
ED2 Rotation:
Goals:
Be able to evaluate and treat patients in the ambulatory setting
Refine comprehensive Orthopedic Trauma Examination
Develop exposure to the Operative environment including: Scrubbing in, maintaining sterile technique, first assisting and developing technical skill at wound closure.
Participate in taking Orthopedic Call under the supervision of an attending Orthopedic Surgeon.
Provide secondary support to the interns in regards to Orthopedic consultations, admissions and discharges
Expectations:
Carry ortho phone and pager at all times and respond in a timely fashion
When seeing patients in clinic, give formal presentation to an attending including any pictures/images and your treatment plan.
All notes should be completed the same day
For pre-operative/post-operative patients, check with the attending physician and/or physicians assistants prior to seeing the patient.
